Use turnstiles to enter and exit the subway. If you need the subway gate, don't hold it open. Board through the front door on local buses and have your MetroCard ready. Buy your ticket before you board and keep it throughout your ride on SBS buses.
I saw this poster hanging in the Gallery at a college art show last week. Gustav Klutsis (January 4, 1895 – February 26, 1938) was a pioneering Latvian photographer and major member of the Constructivist avant-garde in the early 20th century. He is known for the Soviet revolutionary and Stalinist propaganda he produced with his wife Valentina Kulagina.

On my way to work I often pass this ornate statue of an angel hailing a cab. It was made back in the 1800’s, long before the automobile. In New York if you have to get around you do what you can.
